Christie: Rutgers Leadership on Pot 'Disjointed'

Trenton -- Gov. Chris Christie said today he was surprised that Rutgers University turned down an opportunity to be the lone grower of the state's medical marijuana crop because it was the school's idea. "They absolutely came to us. I wouldn't have even thought about it," Christie said, adding that he was disappointed when he heard university leaders say the plan was unworkable.

Will California Legalize Pot?

California -- Today, at least a third of Americans say they've tried smoking weed. Is it possible that after half a century of increasingly mainstreamed pot use the public is ready for marijuana to be legal? We may soon find out. California has long been on the front lines of marijuana policy. In 1996, it became the first state to legalize medical cannabis. This year, the Tax Cannabis initiative -- now officially baptized Proposition 19 -- may very well be the best chance any state has ever had at legalizing the consumption, possession and cultivation of marijuana for anyone over 21.

VA Right To OK Pot Use in States Where It's Legal

Colorado -- The decision by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to allow patients to use medical marijuana in the 14 states where it is legal, including Colorado, is a humane and just call. As it stood, VA patients who followed state guidelines and legally used marijuana were at risk of being denied pain medications. That's because the VA has rules barring illegal drug use by patients who are taking pain medicine, and marijuana is still illegal under federal law.

Colo. Pot Shops Face Closure Under Tough New Rules

Colorado -- Nearly a fifth of Colorado's medical marijuana dispensary operators could be forced out of business in coming weeks because of new state rules barring some convicted felons from the pot business, federal drug authorities say. The Drug Enforcement Administration reviewed requirements under a new state law to see how many felons could be forced out of business. The DEA estimates that up to 18 percent of current dispensaries may be shuttered by the no-felon rule.

House Votes To Eliminate Cocaine Disparity

Washington, D.C. -- The House of Representatives passed a historic bill Wednesday that narrows sentencing disparities between crack and powder cocaine convictions, which civil rights and civil liberties experts say contributed to the disproportionate imprisonment of African-Americans in recent decades. The Senate passed its version of the bill in March. President Barack Obama, who during the 2008 presidential campaign said the current legal disparity "cannot be justified and should be eliminated," is expected to sign the legislation.

THE THC SHOWS PREMIERE IN MULTIPLE CITIES IN 2010-2011
UNDER EXPERT EYE OF TODD MCCORMICK AND PARTNERS

June 21st, 2010—There’s no stopping Todd McCormick. The man simply doesn’t rest. Since 1994 he’s been a Medical Marijuana activist known and loved by insiders in this now burgeoning industry. He shares the passionate legalization vision of iconic legend Jack Herer and in Jack's passing, is now the editor of "The Emperor Wears no Clothes".

He paid for his beliefs by becoming one of the first people arrested and incarcerated in Federal prison for five years in a test case between California’s medical Marijuana law and the Federal Government. He fought off childhood cancer ten times. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

This year McCormick is rolling his vast experience and dynamic energy into an effort to deliver a series of truly professional and highly educational Medical Marijuana Shows under the "THC Show” banner in cities slated to include Detroit, Los Angeles, Seattle and Denver.

Giving the Cannabis Industry a Good Name

“The THC Shows will strive to give our exciting and important industry a good name across the board,” says McCormick, who will serve as executive director. “The floor layouts will be clean and convenient to shop for industry professionals and everyone who understands and values the Cannabis lifestyle. We are very keen to partner with the communities in each city to deliver fresh, pertinent and timely information during a series of conference sessions at each show. The diversity of exhibitors will cover the gamut from all matter of hemp products to accessories to glass art to clothing to growing equipment, supplies and much more.”

The shows will emphasize their professional approach by not allowing smoking. “We are anything but a ‘smoke-out’, McCormick notes. “We want to create an environment where we can help to nurture and celebrate a very dynamic industry that will provide a good living to hundreds of thousands of people in the years to come and many products in high demand among the medical marijuana community nationwide,” he adds. “The THC Show is the follow-up to my highly successful launch of THC Expo in Los Angeles in 2009.”

The THC Show Begins this Fall

The THC Show will begin its tour in cities slated to include Detroit, Los Angeles, Seattle and Denver. It is expected that all events will be held annually.

In addition to the shows themselves, the group will offer a dedicated, year-round on-line community available at the show’s soon to be launched web site at www.thcshow.com.

To deliver on his show vision, McCormick has partnered with successful businessman and medical marijuana patient Benjamin Javaheri, owner of Another Uneek Idea, LLC and Uneek Fine Jewelry Collections in Los Angeles.

The third member of the team is partner Howard Hauben, owner of H2 Events in New York and a highly experienced show organizer and successful entrepreneur.

Background

As executive director of The THC Show, Todd McCormick’s story is well-known to many people in the Cannabis culture; enduring cancer and with it; chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery no less than nine major times in eight years as a child between the ages of 2 and 10, only to go into remission with his disease with the assistance of medical marijuana at the tender age of 10. After gaining his health through martial art training, refined diet, and focus, McCormick went on to become one of the leading advocates for social change in the 90s around medical marijuana and hemp as an environmental resource. He started his activism in 1994 by teaming up with the efforts of Jack Herer and becoming one of the editors on the seminal book; the Emperor Wears No Clothes.

In 1994 McCormick went on to become one of the first of 10 patients in the Netherlands to get a doctor's prescription once doctors started writing them again. In 1995 he became the first person to import medical marijuana into America from the Netherlands legally using his prescription.

He founded the first Cannabis Compassion Club in San Diego in 1995 and was also arrested for medical marijuana in what became a national test-case in Ohio in the summer of 1995, at which time the judge agreed to let McCormick use medical marijuana while incarcerated. He was released before any such accommodations could be made in jail.

McCormick went on to Amsterdam and became editor-in-chief of Hemp Life magazine for the long-established company Highlife. He returned to California in 1997 and teamed up with bestselling author Peter McWilliams and wrote “How to Grow Medical Marijuana”.

During the writing of that book he became the test case between the federal government and state law when he became the first federal arrest after the passage of California's medical marijuana law. With the assistance of Woody Harrelson and Larry Flynt's attorneys, McCormick went on to fight the federal government for three years until he was railroaded into prison. Upon release after 5 years, he was welcomed warmly back into his old neighborhood with a ‘welcome home from prison party’ thrown by Bill Maher. Since his release from prison McCormick has been co-producing parties at the Playboy mansion for the Marijuana Policy Project and working on his next book titled; “GrowMedicine” and “Reefer Gladness; Confessions of a Cancer Patient.”

His story has been an inspiration to many and is currently being drafted into a movie by the Peabody award-winning writer Aaron McGruder.

Benjamin Javaheri is a highly successful entrepreneur and partner of the THC Show, LLC and is credited with having brought together the show’s three partners to initiate this exciting mission. Javaheri is also president of Uneek Fine Jewelry Collections, which he established in 1997 at the age of 22. In little more than a decade, Javaheri has made Uneek Jewelry one of the top brands in the demanding field of high-end jewelry. Not only does he design the jewelry, he also manages his own in-house manufacturing which creates all of its pieces domestically in Los Angeles. From Alaska to Florida you'll see Uneek Fine Jewelry Collections in well established high end stores. Javaheri also designed and manufactured the World Series of Poker bracelets for Corum Watches for ESPN. He has brought the ideas and energy of a new generation, coupled with a centuries-old approach to his art and his business.

Howard Hauben is partner of THC Show, LLC. He is also president and CEO of New York based, H2 Events, a professional show organizing company with events in the fine jewelry, mixed martial arts and now Cannabis industries. His 10-year-old Centurion show in the fine jewelry business is an industry leader.

Hauben launched H2 Events in 2001 following a 23 year career with Miller Freeman, which became the world's largest trade show organizer during his tenure as a corporate Senior Vice President. At Miller Freeman, Hauben's oversight included some 14 shows in the Variety and General Merchandise, Gift and Fine Jewelry trades.

Hauben also served Miller Freeman as corporate Senior Vice President of Internet Strategy and Development for all 11 of the company’s US divisions.
